TearCare® System – Treatment for Dry Eye
Are you dealing with dry, irritated, gritty eyes every day? You may be suffering from dry eye disease.
One of the top causes of dry eye disease is meibomian gland dysfunction. At Primary Eye Care in Arlington, we provide an exciting in-office treatment called TearCare® to treat dry eye symptoms due to meibomian gland dysfunction.
Meibomian gland dysfunction
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) occurs when the oil-producing glands in the eyelids do not work properly. These glands normally release an oily layer that helps keep the eyes lubricated and slows tear evaporation. When the glands become blocked or inflamed, they produce less oil, causing tears to evaporate too quickly and leading to dryness, irritation, or discomfort.
MGD can also contribute to eyelid inflammation, known as blepharitis. Blepharitis may cause redness, discharge, or styes—small, tender bumps along the eyelid margin.
TearCare® System
The TearCare® System is an FDA-approved treatment for patients suffering from dry eye due to meibomian gland dysfunction.
What can I expect during TearCare® treatment?
During treatment, your eye doctor will place two flexible eyelid devices on the upper and lower eyelids that administer localized heat to the meibomian glands. The gentle heat helps to clear the clogged glands. The treatment is safe, painless, and only takes a few minutes. Following the procedure, your eye doctor may manually express or clear away obstructions from your meibomian glands.
What are the benefits of TearCare® treatment?
Other treatments for meibomian gland dysfunction require placing something over your eyes and keeping your eyes shut. However, TearCare® treatment allows you to keep your eyes open and blink normally for a more comfortable experience.
TearCare® treatments are also highly effective at clearing blockages and providing long-lasting relief from dry eye. If your dry eye is caused by meibomian gland dysfunction, speak to your eye doctor at Primary Eye Care in Arlington about TearCare® treatments.
