TearCare® System – Treatment for Dry Eye
Our TearCare® dry eye treatment in Arlington, TN, offers relief to people with dry eye disease and meibomian gland disorders.
One of the top causes of dry eye disease is meibomian gland dysfunction. At Primary Eye Care in Arlington, we provide an exciting in-office treatment called TearCare® to treat dry eye symptoms due to meibomian gland dysfunction.
Meibomian gland dysfunction
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is an eye disorder caused by the dysfunction of the meibomian glands located in the eyelids. These glands produce a protective oily film that coats the surface of the eye, keeping it lubricated and preventing irritation. When these glands get inflamed or clogged, they secrete less oil and your tears evaporate more quickly than they should, resulting in eye irritation or discomfort. MGB may also lead to eyelid inflammation, also known as blepharitis, which can cause discharge and styes (a sensitive red bump at the eyelid margin).
People over 50 are at higher risk of developing meibomian gland dysfunction. Eye makeup, such as eyeliner and mascara, can also clog the meibomian glands if not removed properly at night.
TearCare® System
The TearCare® System is an FDA-approved treatment for patients suffering from dry eye due to meibomian gland dysfunction.
What can I expect during TearCare® treatment?
During treatment, your eye doctor will place two flexible eyelid devices on the upper and lower eyelids that administer localized heat to the meibomian glands. The gentle heat helps to clear the clogged glands. The treatment is safe, painless, and only takes a few minutes. Following the procedure, your eye doctor may manually express or clear away obstructions from your meibomian glands.
What are the benefits of TearCare® treatment?
Other treatments for meibomian gland dysfunction require placing something over your eyes and keeping your eyes shut. However, TearCare® treatment allows you to keep your eyes open and blink normally for a more comfortable experience.
TearCare® treatments are also highly effective at clearing blockages and providing long-lasting relief from dry eye. If your dry eye is caused by meibomian gland dysfunction, speak to your eye doctor at Primary Eye Care in Arlington about TearCare® treatments.
